This module focuses on the trends and reactivity of elements in Groups 1, 2 and 7. You’ll study reactions, solubility trends, displacement reactions, and periodic trends in atomic radius, ionisation energy and melting point across Period 3. This module develops core inorganic reasoning skills.

By the end of this module you will be able to: • describe and explain the trends in reactivity and solubility in Group 1 and Group 2 • interpret observations of Group 2 metal reactions with water and acids • explain the uses of Group 2 compounds such as Ca(OH)₂ and BaSO₄ • describe and explain halogen reactivity and displacement reactions • explain trends in boiling points and oxidising power of halogens • write ionic equations for halide precipitation reactions • describe and explain Period 3 trends in melting point, atomic radius and ionisation energy
